Happy New Year ...

        Well, Happy Chinese New Year!

Yep ... The Year Of The Rooster! I know, I know, the last day of the 15 day celebration was on Wednesday, so I'm a day or two late ... at least I'm not a dollar short, not this time!

I was hoping to do a Chinese New Year entry on Wednesday, but I couldn't find a photo that would work and you know me ... no photo, no entry! But today I lucked out, I took the scenic route on my way to Hollywood this afternoon hoping to find something along the way to photograph.

As I was passing a small strip mall, I noticed some Chinese banners in the parking lot, I can't read Chinese but assumed that they must be left over from a New Year celebration this past week. I turned around thinking I would get a shot and at least I would have something to use next year for a Chinese New Year entry!

Just as I was parking a New Year Dance/Parade was beginning and I was able to get some great shots. I don't really know the story behind the dance/Parade that I watched but was beautiful!

I'll give you my interpurtation ...

There were drums and cymbols ... very, very loud! It looked as if the dragons were intruding on the village ...

I would assume that the lettuice and the orange on a string was a symbol of the crops and the dragon was taking and devoruing them ... then there were a whole lot of firecrackers and a whole lot of noise from the drums and thecymbols ...

The dragons got frightend and ran away, you can tell how loud it was by looking at everyone cover there ears! Now ... if any of you know the real story, drop me a line!

Sometimes it pays to take the scenic route, I'm glad that I was in no real hurry to get where I was going today or I would have missed this!

More beautiful and colorful photos from today to come!

Wonderful photos.  I haven't seen a Chinese New Years celebration in a long time.  I was thinking about going into NYC this year.  Maybe NEXT year....

Wonderful. Look forward to more of these pics. As for the year of the Rooster, I think this must be my year then ~ I'm always running around like a headless chicken!

Wow that would have been fun to run upon-  unless you were drunk or something.  Can you imagine someone being drunk and turning the corner and running in sheer terror!  LOL!  I'm silly this morning.

That looks like fun, but I don't know the story.

I love your journal.  As I recall, the Dragons only eat lettuce.  The fire crackers are to drive away evil spirits...  more than that, I don't remember.  Oh yeah, evil spirits are afraid of dragons.  The people lure the dragons with lettuce so they'll chase off the bad luck, I think.  Don't quote me.

Lucky you! I think it would be great fun to witness the celebration.  I work with two Chinese people. I'd ask them but I don't want to have them find my journal by showing them yours. Selfish aren't I? ;-) ---Robbie
