The Circle Game

Yesterday a child came out to wonder
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star
Then the child moved ten times round the seasons
Skated over ten clear frozen streams
Words like, when you’re older, must appease him
And promises of someday make his dreams
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and dawn
We’re captive on the carousel of time
We can’t return we con only look behind
From where we came
The Circle Game

And go round and round and round
In the circle game.

Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now
Cartwheels turn to car wheels thru the town
And they tell him,
Take your time, it won’t be long now
Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and dawn
We’re captive on the carousel of time
We can’t return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty
Though his dreams have lost some grandeur
Coming true
There’ll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty
Before the last revolving year is through.
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We’re captive on the carousel of time
We can’t return, we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

I just love this Joni Mitchell Song, I was singing it to myself the other day when I was taking the photo above. I've been doing a lot of thinking this week about my own Circle Game.

Where I'm going ... where I've been ... living in the moment ... revisiting the past ... the ups and the downs ... the highs and the lows.

And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and dawn
We’re captive on the carousel of time
We can’t return we con only look behind
From where we came
The Circle Game

Right now I have an overwhelming desire to reconnect with my past in hopes of getting a better sense of direction for my future. I'm so looking forward to the journey and so grateful that all of my choices are my own.

I had to laugh out loud when I saw this photo <-- in Judi Heartsongs journal yesterday ... great minds think alike:)

                                       Happy Thursday                                          *** Coy ***

Lovely picture. I have always loved carousel horses. Used to spend hours on them when I was a child.  Lovely words as well xxxxxx

I have a friend Diana and this is one of her favorite songs. I always liked it.I have a Joni Mitchell CD with it on it. It always makes me think of my son and how very fast he grew up. It also reminds me how I got to relive my childhood through his eyes. Thanks for stirring those memories, Nelle

Your picture immediately made me think of the carousel horse at Judi's! So pretty. You know, a lot of us here at J-land have been doing some inner reflecting on our pasts and potential futures lately. Must be something we ate! Resolution, as in resolving things, is a wonderful, peaceful feeling. xoxo

Boy do I feel out of the loop.  I don't think I've ever heard that song before.  I liked what I read of it, now I want to listen to it and see if it connects.

LOL  I was going to mention Judi's entry in my comment here.  I just left her journal and when I got here and saw this, I thought I was having some kind of deja vu moment.  LOL  Great song and photo.  :D

As I read the lyrics, I wondered if it was a poem then it sounded more and more like lyrics. I don't think I have ever heard this song. It's beautiful. Thanks for sharing it. I think its nice to take stock of our life from time to time to make sure that the wheels are still going in the right direction, maybe oil one or two if they need it, and to reflect on the distance they have traveled and how far you have come. Enjoy your time! :-) ---Robbie
